ET has gone open source somewhat of a year ago:

Read the license thoroughly, there are legal obligations associated with it

EDIT: Le Furet posted right before me :)

I know there is plenty of people (Trickjumpers, TJMod developers, Cheat makers etc.) who could develop the game to the next level, but I think it's quite a big task and requires lots of time and motivation to do it.

There are numerous of people working on and for ET day and night, without a single penny paid
As a mapper/scripter myself, it's about passion, creativity and a hobby for the game. I wouldn't pay anything to anyone to make something for ET, because if he/she never intended to make something for the community without being paid, he's working without any motivation other than money.

Good riddance I say :)

The only way you can thank/motivate those people mapping and modding is by showing interest and playing the game ;)
