The most important part, the list of features:

ETXreaL
IMPORTANT: Changed media license for community contributions to "Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported"

Changed required minimum OpenGL version to 3.2 on Windows
20 - 80% faster runtime speed by using better Visual Studio compiler options
Replaced VS 2008 and SCons project files by Premake 4.3
Changed default binary installation folders to bin/ to avoid conflicts between different architectures
Improved r_softShadows quality and speed with irregular shadowmap sampling like in Crysis
Implemented Exponential Variance Shadow Mapping to fight the VSM light bleeding problems
Optimized tangent space calculations for ET skeletal models (big speed improvement if r_vboVertexSkinning 0)
Fixed bugs concerning r_vboDeformVertexes
Added more ET specific keywords to the .shader parser
Added top-down view for r_showBspNodes
Added engine version to the console
Updated JPG loader to libjpeg 8c
Added Omni-bot 0.81 to default etmain game
Defaulted com_maxfps to 125
Rewrote HDR tone mapping to use correct RGB <-> XYZ <-> Yxy color space conversions
Added GUID system to generate etkeys which are sent as cl_guid
Renamed r_dynamicLightCastShadows to r_dynamicLightShadows


ETXMap

Improved ETXMap -map2map -format quake3 using additional support for worldspawn detail brushes
Improved ETXMap -map2map -format quake3 to support texture coordinates without GtkRadiant 1.4
Improved alternate BSP splitter algorithm for faster map compiles and better rendering speeds
Updated JPG loader to libjpeg 8c
Changed Unix home dir from .etwolf to .etxreal


ETMain

Added over 1 GB new high resolution textures using diffuse, normal and specular material information
Added replacement textures for battery and fueldump by Eonfge
Added high quality skyboxes and models by AVOC
Added fueldump additions by KeMoN
Converted original ET maps to the Doom 3 .map format and added an etx_ prefix to them


Minimum system requirements:
CPU: 2 GHz (Intel or compatible)
System Memory: 512 MB
Graphics card: Any graphics card that supports Direct3D 10 and OpenGL >= 3.2

Recommended system requirements:
CPU: 3 GHz+ (Intel or compatible)
System Memory: 1024 MB+
Graphics card: GeForce 8800 GT, Radeon HD4850 or higher.

BTW, if you'd like to discover all the XreaL's new features, you should start a local server on etmain or connect to some XreaL server: http://gamestats.darkserver.it/etxreal/servers/

Just, a 1gb file is not the best thing to have to download through ET, so I'm gonna do it manually.

I've been wondering if the claims about fps and overall performance increase are actually true. I mean, from the video I can tell they added some eye-candy effects (which I, quite honestly, wouldn't use in a game like ET), but does it also make better use of GPU rendering, or even add multi-threading support? Ofc, since you aren't one of the devs my question is more about your first impression.

Well for me the game runs just as smooth as ET, stable 125 fps everywhere, the sparkle effect caused by lights is in my opinion a bit too strong (can be seen on railgun) and it should be reduced, the effect is so strong that it makes some maps ugly. But the textures are a lot better.

1) Try to restart your PC. Sometimes, some weird things happen with 3D acceleration (including OpenGL) and it needs restart your system.
2) Try to update your graphics drivers.
3) If you have motherboard with VIA chipset, try to update your motherboard driver.

lol i tried two of the servers running it and had UI and shader issues on both!! so didnt really look all that good being all yellow and black lol:eeks:

I was doing some research for a ETXreaL (Linux) how-to and I located this thread. I plan on having the GIT (how-to) build finished this weekend. That said, I did capture some bots hammering the the shite out of each other using the Linux client.

You should've recorded the stock maps which have the new sharp textures and stuff, ofc that shows the new lighting, but you should definitely check out the stock maps, especially goldrush is awesome! :)

maybe you not loaded the right maps or have not setup the game on high quality on your pc

Bad news, ETXreaL will be a standalone game in the next build which means there will be no compatibility with ET anymore... As I know there are some issues which cause that ET cannot work right with ETX.

But ETXreal is the way ET should/meant to be played. Hm, well, maybe not thaaat bad - now people can choose to play old fashioned ET and ETXreal :)

Quite honestly if you play ET at a somewhat "competitive" level, or if you simply want the best performance, your .cfg will be tweaked to the least demanding of values and will generally not make the textures look good. I don't really think ET needs better textures. All it needs is more stability and multi-threading support. I mean, it's very demanding for an 8 year old game, even on newer systems you're not free from lags.

That being said, I think that if the standalone version of ETX manages to gain some popularity, it will be a great game and I will play it for sure. Obviously it would benefit from being developed as a standalone project, imo. It could be something innovative and modern while still being faithful to the key factors that made ET the game we all love. At least that's my view: I don't want an ET overhaul mod, I want a worthy follow-up to it.

Small announcement
If somebody hosts etxreal server and it "crash" with error:

ERROR: SP_team_WOLF_objective: exceeded MAX_MULTI_SPAWNTARGETS (16)

Please don't inform us anymore about this. We are getting more and more bug requests. We know about this bug, and we are trying to find what's going up. Not everyone have this problem so this must be something specific.

But we should get some logs. Please add here your logs (better with +set developer 1) and your server config on sourceforge.net https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=3354585&group_id=27204&atid=389772
I added this bug a lot time ago.

Try changing gametype or something similar.
